My name is Matthew A Paul, and I am an aspiring movie critic. I am currently studying media theory and criticism at California State University, Northridge so I can achieve that dream. I have always loved movies, but it wasn’t until my late teens that I started to appreciate them as an art form. I began to see that there was so much more to cinema than cool characters, explosions, beautiful people, and great stories. The way they are shot, the distinctive styles of the director, the beauty of the music, the significance that can lie in themes and be applied to real life. All of these aspects and more bring out the best in film.
My favorite films include the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the original Star Wars trilogy, Harry Potter, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Dark Knight Trilogy, various Disney and Pixar films, especially The Lion King and Toy Story, Spider-Man 2, James Cameron’s Avatar, Zero Dark Thirty, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, Inception, The Martian, and the original Die Hard.
On the flip side, my least favorite films include The Last Airbender, the Transformers series, the Star Wars prequels, Batman & Robin, Spider-Man 3, Terminator: Genisys, Godzilla (1998 & 2014), Fantastic Four (2015), Planet of the Apes (2001), Do the Right Thing, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
